A successful machine installation is not decided on installation day — it is decided months earlier, in the early engineering phases where decisions about layout, process flow and equipment requirements can still be made without costing a fortune to change. That is precisely the phase Rungstrom Plant Engineering was created for.

We help clients, plant owners and project managers translate a production concept into a well-considered technical foundation: a factory layout that supports material flow, P&ID diagrams that reflect the actual process intent, and equipment lists and specifications precise enough to form the basis for a genuine tender. This is the work that makes the subsequent installation more predictable — and far less expensive.

Rungstrom Plant Engineering draws directly on our experience from the execution phase. We have seen what happens when the layout has not been properly thought through, when the P&ID does not match the actual installation, and when equipment specifications are too loose to control the vendors. We bring that knowledge back into the early phases — for our clients’ benefit.

What we deliver

Our services

From a blank slate to installation-ready documentation — we cover the engineering phases that make execution possible.

Plant planning & factory layout

A good factory layout is not just about fitting the equipment in — it is about material flow, safety, maintenance access and operating economics over the next 20 years. We develop and optimise factory layouts for industrial and production plants with a focus on efficient mass flow, logistics, crane spans, foundation and utility placement, and future-proofing of the plant. We work closely with the client and the wider engineering team, and can deliver everything from schematic layout proposals to fully coordinated floor plans ready for regulatory processing.

P&ID — process diagrams

Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams are the foundation of any process plant — and they are far easier to change on paper than on the installation site. We produce P&ID diagrams for new plants and carry out technical review and optimisation of existing P&IDs. We ensure that the diagrams reflect the actual process intent, that the instrumentation is complete and consistent, and that the basis for HAZOP, SIL assessment and regulatory approval is in place.

Equipment lists & technical specifications

A precise equipment specification is the best investment you can make in a tender project. We produce equipment lists, technical datasheets and requirement specifications that are detailed enough to ensure a comparable basis in the tender round — and realistic enough for vendors to submit serious bids. We define the critical technical parameters, set requirements for documentation and CE marking, and ensure that the specifications are consistent with the layout and P&ID.

Concept phase & early consultancy

Early consultancy is the most value-creating consultancy. In the concept phase we help to establish whether a production concept is technically and economically feasible, identify the critical technical choices that commit the project early, and produce a basis for the investment decision. We can carry out feasibility studies, capacity analyses and technical comparisons of alternative solutions — and we present the results in a clear, decision-friendly format.

Our method

From idea to installation-ready documentation

We work systematically and iteratively — and we involve the client in the decisions that matter.

01

Understanding production requirements & constraints

We start by understanding what the plant needs to produce, under what conditions it will operate, and what the most important constraints are — area, budget, utilities, regulatory requirements and future flexibility. This forms the basis for all subsequent engineering work.

02

Concept development & option assessment

We develop one or more technical concepts and evaluate them against the stated requirements — technical performance, operating economics, flexibility and implementation risk. The client is actively involved in choosing the direction the project will take.

03

Layout, P&ID & equipment specification

Once the concept is established, we produce the factory layout, P&ID and equipment lists to the level of detail required for the specific purpose — from schematic FEED documents to fully detailed tender packages. Everything is coordinated and internally consistent.

04

Review, optimisation & vendor dialogue

We carry out technical reviews of our own and others’ material, identify ambiguities and inconsistencies, and incorporate vendor input into the optimisation. A good P&ID and layout is always the result of iterations — and we keep that process moving.

05

Handover to the execution phase

We ensure a smooth transition to the execution phase by delivering well-documented and clearly explained material, participating in the kick-off with the installation team, and remaining available as a technical reference throughout execution. Plant Engineering and Machine Installations work closely together within Rungstrom — a direct benefit for our clients.

The engineering work that makes installation possible

Most problems in the execution phase have their roots in decisions — or a lack of them — from the early engineering phases. Unclear specifications, layouts that have not been thought through, P&IDs that do not match reality. We help resolve these issues before they become expensive.

We bring experience from the execution side into the planning phases — and we know exactly what the installation team needs from us to do their job well.

  • Experience from the execution phase — we know what the installation team needs
  • Plant planning for aluminium, pharma and general industry
  • P&ID development and review — precise and documented
  • Equipment specs that create a comparable tender basis
  • Early consultancy that protects the budget
