Rungstrom Engineering Solutions has in-depth technical experience with industrial aluminium furnaces — built up over years of hands-on project responsibility at giga foundries, multi-site projects and specialist installations for major Scandinavian and international OEMs in the automotive industry.
We are not a generalist consultancy. We are specialists who know aluminium furnaces from the ground up: from the early technical specification and supplier selection, through FAT and commissioning, to day-to-day operation, troubleshooting and optimisation deep into the furnace’s service life. We have held full technical responsibility for aluminium melting chains with capacity of up to 4 tonnes of liquid aluminium per hour — and we know precisely what separates a furnace installation that works from one that costs money every single shift.
Our consultancy is supplier-neutral. We do not sell equipment and have no commercial agreements with furnace manufacturers. We work exclusively in our clients’ interest — and we bring the technical depth that makes a real difference when it counts.
Our aluminium furnace services
Four specialist areas — all grounded in direct experience from real projects under international requirements.
Consultancy & specification for new acquisitions
Selecting a new aluminium furnace is one of the most capital-intensive decisions a foundry or smelting operation makes. A wrong purchase can mean years of production problems, high operating costs and expensive upgrades — while the right choice, made correctly from the outset, delivers stable operation and low maintenance for decades.
We help you navigate the technical and commercial market with precision and professional backing:
- Technical specification based on production targets, raw materials and existing infrastructure
- Supplier evaluation — we know the manufacturers and assess tenders technically and commercially without any interests of our own
- Tender advisory: RFQ preparation, evaluation of responses and contract negotiation
- Technical due diligence when taking over a plant with existing furnaces
Fault diagnosis & troubleshooting
Aluminium furnaces that are not performing optimally cost money — every single shift. Temperature fluctuations, yield outside tolerance, energy consumption that does not match the specification, burner faults, refractory material degrading faster than expected — there are many ways a furnace can underperform, and the symptoms are not always straightforward.
We offer systematic fault diagnosis on aluminium furnaces in production:
- Condition assessment: temperature profiles, combustion analysis, refractory and instrumentation
- Systematic diagnosis of deviations: heat losses, atmosphere problems, dross formation and control system faults
- Emergency support during production stoppages — remotely or on site
- Documented problem report with root cause identification and concrete action recommendations
Optimisation & process consultancy
An aluminium furnace that is correctly set up and operated can deliver significantly better economics than an identical furnace that has never been systematically optimised. We regularly see potential for 5–15% energy savings, measurable reductions in metal yield losses and significant refractory service life improvements — at plants that appear to be functioning well.
Our process consultancy covers:
- Energy optimisation: burner consumption, heat losses and process profiles with concrete setpoint recommendations
- Metal yield optimisation: reducing dross percentage and oxidation losses
- Refractory & service life: assessment and recommendations on material selection and preventive maintenance
- Process documentation: operating instructions, parameter reports and operator procedures
- Capacity optimisation: flow analysis, changeover times and planned maintenance
Technical sparring for service organisations
Service companies, maintenance teams and technical suppliers working with aluminium furnaces regularly encounter situations that require more than standard service knowledge. An atypical fault code, refractory material behaving unexpectedly, a customer asking questions you cannot answer with certainty — access to a specialist with deep process understanding makes a real difference.
We offer technical sparring and back-office support to service organisations:
- Ad hoc technical consultancy — billed per hour or on a retainer basis
- Second opinion: independent technical assessment of fault analyses, tenders or proposed solutions
- Documentation and specification support for service reports and upgrade specifications
- Technical walkthroughs for service engineers on specific furnace types and systems
How we work
A structured approach tailored to your situation — whether we are involved from day one or called in to address an urgent problem.
Technical scoping & situation analysis
Every engagement begins with us understanding your situation precisely: furnace type and make, operational history, alloys produced, maintenance practices, current problems and strategic objectives. We ask the right questions — and we know what the answers mean. This gives us the foundation to advise with precision rather than generic recommendations.
Analysis & diagnostics
Based on the scoping, we carry out the relevant analysis — either as desk work based on your documentation and operational data, as a site visit, or both. We use the method that gives the most accurate picture of the situation — not the one that is easiest to sell. We always deliver written documentation of our findings and the methodology applied.
Concrete recommendations with prioritisation
Our deliverable is always action-oriented: what needs to be done, in what order, with what expected effect and at what cost. We are not afraid to state what is urgent and what can wait — and we are transparent about the uncertainties in our assessments. A report full of generic recommendations is not our product.
Implementation follow-up
If required, we follow up on the implementation of our recommendations — either as ongoing technical sparring, as review of supplier work, or by participating in critical milestones such as start-up after overhaul, rebuild or new acquisition. We stay involved for as long as it adds value — and no longer.

Technical depth — not generalist consultants
Most consultants know aluminium furnaces from specifications. We know them from projects — from the decisions that were difficult to make, the failures we have seen go wrong, and the experience that only comes from having held full technical responsibility.
We are supplier-neutral and independent. We do not sell equipment and have no commercial agreements with furnace manufacturers. Our only interest is providing you with the best possible technical basis for your decisions.
- Direct project experience from giga foundries with capacity of up to 4 t/h
- In-depth knowledge of international furnace manufacturers — strengths and weaknesses
- Supplier-neutral — we work exclusively in your interest
- Experience across melting, holding, dosing and heat treatment furnaces
- Available within one working day — direct contact with the specialist
